Project Manager - Artijaan, Afghanistan

  • Position Title: Project Manager

  • Location: Kabul, Afghanistan (possibility for occasional remote work )

  • Artijaan is a social enterprise dedicated to safeguarding and creating sustainable livelihoods for Afghan artisans, particularly women and youth. In partnership with ACTED, we have launched the SCALE-UP AFGHANs project, a targeted intervention aimed at fostering economic resilience through artisanal craftsmanship. This project addresses the sever economic challenges faced by Afghanistan, with a focus on technical skills enhancement, market access, and community-based employment opportunities.

    • Safeguard Livelihoods: Providing technical and business development support to empower artisans.

    • Women's Networks: Establishing and supporting women's networks in both rural and urban areas.

    • Market Integration: Strengthening the linkage between rural economies and national/international markets.

  • The Project Manager will support the Country Director in the overall management and strategic direction of Artijaan's operations in Afghanistan. The role involves overseeing the implementation of the SCALE-UP AFGHANs project, ensuring alignment with organisational goals, and managing relationships with stakeholders, including local communities, international donors, and partner organisations.

    • Project Management: Oversee the implementation of the SCALE-UP AFGHANs project, ensuring that all activities are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget. The artisans we work with are located in rural areas across the country, and field travel for site visits and to maintain strong relationships and oversight will be a key requirement for the role.

    • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of project managers and technical experts, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

    • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and execution of strategic plans, aligning project objectives with the broader goals of Artijaan.

    • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with local communities, international donors, government agencies, and partner organisations.

    • Monitoring and Evaluation: Ensure robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks are in place to track project outcomes and impact, and use insights to inform decision-making.

    • Financial Management: Work closely with the finance team to oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and resource allocation for the project.

    • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with project implementation, particularly in the context of Afghanistan's volatile environment.

    • Reporting: Prepare and present regular reports to the Country Director and donors, highlighting key achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.

    • Experience:

      A minimum of 4 years of experience within the humanitarian or development sector, with a focus on livelihoods, economic development, or social enterprises.

      Proven experience working in volatile and conflict-affected contexts, preferably in Afghanistan or similar settings.

      Demonstrated experience in managing projects funded by institutional donors, including the EU, USAID, or other major agencies.

      Strong understanding of the private sector within a social enterprise context, with a focus on market integration and value chain development.

    • Education:

      A Master’s degree in International Development, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree with extensive and relevant professional experience will also be considered.

    • Skills:

      Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff.

      Excellent financial skills with experience in budget management and accurate forecasting to support business growth.

      Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.

      Proven ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines in challenging environments.

      Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.

      Professional proficiency in written and spoken English; knowledge of Dari/Pashto is an advantage.
